Wether its natural permed or curling ironed.
Other signs of damaged hair is that the artificial color seems to be fading. You will Probably notice the color faded faster than normal
Maybe now you're hair isn't growing back and feels stretchy.
Then This education you may find very useful.
Now lets just clarify
Millions of People have no issues with what typically hairstylists call "box color". Meaning any Hair color bought n used from any store.
Here are some important Hair basics.
Hair is composed of protein that grows from cells originating within the hair follicle.
This is where the hair begins.
As soon as these living cells form, they begin their journey upward through the hair follicle.
They mature in a process called keratinization.
As these newly formed cells mature, they fill up with a fibrous protein called keratin. After they have filled with keratin, the cells move upward, lose their nucleus, and die.
By the time the hair shaft emerges from the scalp, the cells of the hair are completely keratinized and are no longer living.
The hair shaft that emerges is a nonliving
Hair is comprised of that has three main layers of the hair shaft are the hair cuticle, cortex, and medulla.
The hair cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair. It consists of a single overlapping layer of transparent, scale-like cells that look like shingles on a roof.
The cuticle layer provides a barrier that protects the inner structure of the hair as it lies tightly against the cortex.
It is responsible for creating the shine and the smooth, silky feel of healthy hair.
It's important To test the cuticle
Of your hair by
pinching single healthy strand of hair between your thumb and forefinger.
Starting near the scalp, pull upward on the strand.
The strand should feel sleek and smooth. Next, hold the end of the hair strand with one hand, and then pinch the strand with the thumb and forefingers of your other hand.
Move your fingers down the hair shaft. In this direction, the hair feels rougher because you are going against the natural growth of the cuticle layer.
A healthy, compact cuticle layer is the hair’s primary defense against damage.
These overlapping scales make up the cuticle layer.
Swelling the hair by applying substances such as haircolor raises the cuticle layer and opens the space between the scales, which allows liquids to penetrate into the cortex.
A healthy hair cuticle layer protects the hair from penetration and prevents damage to hair fibers.
Oxidation haircolors, permanent waving solutions, and chemical hair relaxers have an alkaline pH to penetrate the cuticle layer, because a high pH swells the cuticle and causes it to lift and expose the cortex.
The cortex is the middle layer of the hair.
It is a fibrous protein core formed by elongated cells containing melanin pigment. This is where your natural color is.
About 90 percent of the total weight of hair comes from the cortex.
The elasticity of the hair and its natural color are the result of the unique protein structures located within the cortex.
The changes involved in oxidation haircoloring, wet setting,
thermal styling, permanent waving,
and chemical hair relaxing take place within cortex.
The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair and is composed of round cells. It is a
Mystery to what the medulla does for the hair.
Highlighting, bleaching and hair coloring damages the strength of the cortex of the hair. Thats when it feels stretchy when wet and straw like when dry.
Hair should stretch 50 percent when wet. When its dry it bounces back.
If your hairs stretchy when wet the
Best thing to do is get a reconstructor n deep conditioner like the Joico Kpak
Joico Kpak adds moisture, shine n protein to damaged cuticle n cortex for strength! Deep conditioning is done in the salon only. aJoico can be purchaesed n used at home or given by the steampunk hair stylists.
Cut the worst off and keep the ends trimmed at least every six weeks! This keeps the split ends form traveling up the hair shaft.
Use a comb on wet hair and a boars bristle brush before shampooing n daily to distribute the natural oils to scalp n hair. Make sure n use less heat until
your hair is healthier! Thanks for reading! SteampunkhairEd Instructor stylist CherylK
